PayTo FAQ's

What is PayTo?

PayTo is a digital payment solution offered by banks and financial institutions in Australia. It allows you to pay instantly from your bank account for eligible payments online.

Payments via PayTo can only be made after you create and authorise a PayTo Agreement in your mobile banking app or online banking. Once authorised, the payment provider can debit your bank account for the payment you initiate, in accordance with the terms you set.

You can view, pause, or cancel your PayTo Agreements directly in your banking app or online banking account.

  1. Select PayTo as your payment method on the payment page.

  2. Set up a PayTo Agreement by entering your PayID or bank account details (BSB and account number). Click Continue.

  3. Authorise your PayTo Agreement in your banking app or online banking. You have 10 minutes to complete this step.

  4. Complete your payment — once authorised, the payment will be processed directly from your bank account, and the payment status will update automatically.

PayID is a unique identifier linked to your bank account, such as a mobile number, email address, ABN or ACN. To use PayID with PayTo, it must first be registered with your bank through your mobile banking app or online banking. You can use a PayID to create a PayTo Agreement, but it is not required. You can also set up PayTo using your BSB and account number.

PayTo can be used for eligible online payments where it is offered. Some products or services may not be eligible, check the payment page for details.

A PayTo Agreement is a payment authorisation between you and the merchant that allows payments from your selected bank account.

Payments can only be made after you authorise the agreement.

The maximum transaction amount for a payment is determined by your bank or financial institution.

You can view, pause, or cancel your PayTo Agreements directly in your banking app or online banking account.

Most Australian banks, credit unions, and financial institutions support PayTo. Check with your bank if you are unsure.

There may be fees associated with using PayTo, as it relies on NPP payment rails. Some merchants choose to absorb these fees, while others may pass them on to customers. Please refer to the merchant’s payment page for details.

  1. Open your mobile banking app or online banking.
  2. Locate the PayTo Agreement marked as Pending authorisation.
  3. Review the payment terms and details.
  4. Approve the agreement. Your bank may ask for a password or OTP. If you do not want to proceed, select Decline. The PayTo Agreement will not be created.

You cannot change the transaction amount once the PayTo Agreement is authorised.

To change the amount, cancel the existing agreement and create a new one.

You can cancel or pause PayTo Agreements at any time via your banking app or online banking.

  • The agreement is not active (paused or cancelled).

  • The payment exceeds your bank’s transaction limits.

  • Insufficient funds in your bank account.

You will receive updates via your mobile banking app, online banking, or other notifications you have set up with your bank.
